Spreading parallel to the northern part of Dubrovnik Riviera is the beautiful archipelago of Elafiti islands. It consists of nine islands out of which only three are inhabited – Koločep, Lopud and Šipan. They are easily reachable either with the regular ferry line from the port of Gruž or with one of the excursion boats from the Old City port. Islands of Koločep and Lopud are both car free, with luscious Mediterranean vegetation and popular sandy beaches. Lopud’s tourism is the most developed, offering hotel and private accommodation, several interesting sights (old churches and palaces) as well as the most famous sandy bay in the Dubrovnik region – Šunj.

Šipan is the largest of the three above mentioned islands, large enough to have an actual road between the two major settlements – Suđurađ and Šipanska luka. The road goes through the interior part of the island where you can see what the locals do apart from tourism – they grow olives, figs, carobs. You can also see the ruins of former summer residences of noble families from the times of Dubrovnik Republic, as this island used to be very popular back then, too. The Skočibuha residence from the 16th century, located in Suđurađ, is still very well preserved thanks to an enthusiastic family who bought it in the late 90s and have been taking care of its preservation ever since.
